Be your best
Seven women touched by cancer get a fresh look for fall.

Sometimes, wisdom comes from unexpected experiences. For these seven volunteers with Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada and The Breast Darn Show Period, both based in Toronto, it was a cancer diagnosis that taught them some valuable life lessons.  As a result, each of them changed in some way, emerging stronger women who appreciate every day. It seemed a fitting time for Canadian Health & Lifestyle to help them get a fresh, new look, to go along with who they are now.

Florianne

Sexy, sleek
and truly stunning

FLORIANNE YEUNG, 48

For Florianne, breast cancer changed her life 180 degrees. After her recovery, she no longer worked to the point of exhaustion and put more emphasis on her health – emotional and physical. She volunteered to do phone counseling at Willow Breast Cancer Support, took up Tai Chi, and became a vegetarian.

Lesson learned
“Enjoy life, be happy and take more time to live life to its fullest.”

Her Look
Hair Florianne’s dry, damaged hair needed a trim to make it look healthy again. By cutting two inches off the bottom and introducing long angled bangs, her hair now has a sexy, sleek look that nicely frames her face. Her colour was too red for her skin. A mahogany shade with a hint of plum adds shine and depth. Colour: Andrey Repka. Cut: Albert Yoon

Makeup Florianne has pretty, delicate features, that didn’t stand out. To put them in the spotlight, using soft feminine colours are the key. Shadows in mocha and cream bring a renewed focus to her eyes, with the mocha doubling as a brow definer. A sweep of blush across her cheeks and a cranberry lipstick completes her sophisticated look. DIY with Revlon’s Fall Looks of Seduction: Age Defying Makeup in Bare Buff; ColorStay 12 Hour Eyeshadow in Copper Spice; Crushed Velvet Lip Crème in Racy Rouge; 3D Extreme Mascara in Blackest Black; Cream Blush in Not So Nude.

AliceYouthful,
fresh and energized

ALICE BURNS,
52

In 2001, a routine mammogram revealed a lump on Alice’s breast. She was successfully treated with chemotherapy and radiation. Through it all, Alice, a mother of four boys, kept her spirits high, crediting her strong faith and positive outlook.

Lesson learned
“It rains on everyone in life. What matters is how you handle it. Breast cancer is not a death sentence, so there’s no need to live in fear.”

Her Look
Hair Alice wanted to keep the length, but her cut made her face appear too round. Square layers helped diminish the roundness, and created the illusion of longer hair. Softly fringed bangs and hair tucked behind the ears give her a youthful, fresh look. Multi-tone highlights in golden and sandy blonde add depth and light to her hair. Cut: Hayley Bloomfield. Colour: Eric Del Monaco.

Makeup With Alice’s new cut and colour warming up her look, her makeup needed to follow suit. Soft shades of brown (taupe, chocolate and mocha) on eyes, lips and cheeks bring out the best in her features. DIY with Estée Lauder After Hours collection: Individualist Natural Finish Makeup in Biscuit; Pure Color Eyeshadow in Pale Moon and Mocha Cup; Double Wear Zero-Smudge Liquid Eyeliner in Midnight; More Than Mascara in Brown/Black; Pure Color Lipstick in Bois de Rose.

BerylPretty
and Polished

BERYL GRAHAM, 62

When diagnosed in 1996 with breast cancer, Beryl was terrified at first. But as she reached a stage where she knew she would recover from breast cancer, there was a renewed appreciation of the small things in life – like having her kids piling into bed with her to watch Oprah when she was feeling weak.

Lesson learned
“Appreciate all the things that are part of every day life, and take advantage of support programs for breast cancer patients offered in the community.”

Her Look
Hair Beryl’s haircut was working for her, but a little fine-tuning gives it stronger lines and a bolder shape. Her very white, naturally grey hair made her look too washed out. Very subtle low lights add depth and dimension to her cut. Cut: Melissa McKenzie. Colour: Eric Del Monaco.

Makeup A rose tinted foundation helps to even out her skin tone and minimize redness. Two plum tones define her eyes, the lightest shade covers the entire lid and the deeper one is applied only in the crease. A moisturizing lipstick with a bit of sheen adds sparkle to her smile. DIY with Clinique Play in the Darks fall collection: Supermoisture Makeup in Fair; Colour Surge Eye Shadow Trio in Come Heather; Naturally Gloss Mascara in Jet Black; Almost Lipstick in Black Plum; Blushing Powder Blush in Smoldering Plum.

ShelleySmokey eyes
and rich colours

SHELLEY D’AMICO, 36

In 1998, Shelley was diagnosed with Hodgkins disease. After treatment, she gave birth to a healthy daughter and began to appreciate more of the things we often take for granted, like wellness, mobility and family.

Lesson learned
“Being beautiful has nothing to do with what you look like; it’s what is in our hearts.”

Her Look
Hair Adding long layers brought new movement and flow to her hair, to make her face the star attraction. Her black hair with blonde highlights was competing with her skin tone. Rich shades of chestnut brown and chocolate give her hair great shine and body. Cut: Mario Deleo. Colour: Kelly “Betty” Toms.

Makeup Shelley is a perfect candidate for sexy, smokey eyes. Shades of grey and forest green, coupled with charcoal eyeliner, make her eyes the centre of attention. Lipstick in a raspberry with a touch of sheen balances her look. DIY with Clarins Golden Lights fall collection: Truly Matte Foundation in Hazelnut; Quartet for Eyes in Forest; Eyeliner in Black; Rouge Appeal Lipstick in Grenadine; Wonder Volume Mascara in Black; Powder Blush in Terra.

JanisWarm
and sassy

JANIS CORNISH, 36

This working mom juggles a full-time job as a computer support technician and the responsibility of raising four kids. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer in February 2007. During her treatment, she began to work with a naturopath who helped her pay more attention to nutrition.

Lesson learned
“It’s my body and I’m going to be careful with what I put into it.”

Her Look
Hair Janis’ hair was too long and heavy for her face shape. A shorter length, just above the shoulders, and the addition of soft layers, flatters and brings emphasis to her eyes. A warm ginger colour enhances her natural reddish brown hair, and light golden blonde highlights around the face compliment her skin tone. Cut: Hayley Bloomfield. Colour: Eric Del Monaco.

Makeup Janis needed more colour to help her pretty features stand out. On her lips and eyes, neutral hues give her a polished look, with a barely there hint of shimmer. DIY with Red Earth: Perfect Definition Foundation in Creamy Bisque; Illusion Lights Eye Shadows in Tropical Punch, Indian Night and Midsummer Dream; Curling Mascara in Black; Shimmer Star Lipstick in Golden Toffee; Hollywood Shine Lip Gloss in Spiced Coral; Twin Line Liner in Golden Chocolate.

TRACEY GUTHRIE, 42

Ten years ago at 31, this young mom with a newborn was shocked to learn she had cancer. During her treatment she continued to work – it was the only thing she felt she had control of. Today, she’s a single mom with three children and is battling cancer once again. Her determination to live life with no regrets continues.

Lesson learned
“Do what you really want to do every day and take the time to create unique memories for your kids and for people who are important to you.”

Her Look
Hair Tracy didn’t want to go short but needed a new style for her fine hair. Long layers create the illusion of thicker hair and provide body, volume and movement. Her colour gives her hair added dimension. A natural, ash blonde and a few lowlights in a honey brown complete the effect of plumping up her hair. Cut: Mario Deleo. Colour: Kelly “Betty” Toms.

Makeup Fun colours enhance Tracey’s new playful style to emphasize her dynamic features. Pink, rose and a dash of green on the eyes make a bold statement, with plenty of eyeliner to add a hint of mystery. A coppery red lipstick plumps up the lips and a delicate plum dusted over the cheeks finishes the look. DIY with Lancôme Mystery Game fall collection: Color Ideal Perfect Match Skin-Perfecting in 10N; Destiny Cube shadows in Deep Fascination; Definicils Pro mascara in Deep Black; Khol Oriental Duo in Black/Or; Color Fever Lipstick in Prune Drama Girl and Blush Subtil in Aplum.

IrmeliNatural
sun-kissed look

IRMELI KOSKINEN, 59

Nothing can shake Irmeli’s faith, even after two rounds of breast cancer. She got through the experiences without pain or worry. She credits her belief in God for her positive frame of mind. The irony is, after friends and family heard the diagnosis, it was Irmeli who was comforting them.

Lesson learned
“You have a choice about how you greet the day. I choose not to live in fear.”

Her Look
Hair Irmeli’s healthy, thick hair overwhelmed her face. To create movement and texture the layers were evened out and the volume tamed by thinning the hair with a special scissor technique. For her colour, a warm blonde shade was used to diminish the ash tones in her hair. Lowlights in a darker blonde gave her hair a natural, just-back-from-Miami sun kissed look. Cut and colour: Andrey Repka.
Makeup Neutral colours were used to accentuate her gorgeous blue eyes. Foundation with a rose tint evens out her skin and eliminates redness. On her eyes, shadows in tan, dove grey and pale pink (highlights the brow bone) add subtle colour and definition. Eyeliner and mascara complete the effect. For the finishing touch, blush with a peach hue and lipstick in a pale rose balance the face. DIY with Maybelline Rock ‘n’ Black fall collection: Pure Makeup in Creamy Natural; Expert Wear Quad Eyeshadow in Rock Icon; Expert Wear Softlining Pencil in Electric Ebony; Expert Wear Blush in Punked Out Peach; Liquid Lipcolour in Blushed Bass; Define-A-Lash Defining Mascara in Very Black. Help for those effected by breast cancer
All of the participants in our photo shoot have two things in common. Their lives were changed forever by a cancer diagnosis, and they are volunteers with the Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada. It is the only breast cancer support organisation of its kind. It provides free information and emotional support for those people whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer – patients, family and friends. To raise funds for its programs, The Breast Darn Show Period is held annually on behalf of Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada. To learn more or to talk to a caring knowledgeable volunteer, call 1-888-778-3100, or visit www.willow.org

The Breast Darn Show Period
The event was created by the Segal sisters and Annie Graham. Their mothers, Dody Segal and Beryl Graham inspired the creation of this unique event through their strength and courage against their battles with breast cancer. The event celebrates, honours, and educates all those who have been touched by this disease with funds raised going to Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada. This year’s event held, in May 2007 raised $37,000 that will directly help the thousands of Canadians receive the support and information services they need while coping with breast cancer within their families.
