They met through the Toronto Chapter of Gilda’s Club, named in honour of comedian Gilda Radner, a warm, welcoming environment where individuals touched by cancer build social and emotional support by sharing personal experiences, ideas and information. Their goal is to raise public awareness of cancer, and life after cancer through training regularly, building friendships and having fun.

Meet six members of Gilda’s Dragon’s, a passionate dragon boat team of women who have all dealt with cancer. Not only will they excite you with the latest in fall beauty but will inspire you as they reflect on their enjoyment of life and good health.

Lina Miranda, 26
Pharmaceutical Representative
Stomach Cancer Survivor

ON FITNESS “Prior to my cancer diagnosis I was somewhat active, but it wasn’t a daily part of my life. Going through cancer treatment made me realize life is too short. Now fitness is part of my daily routine; it’s my way of saying thanks to my body.”

ON HER NEW LOOK “I came out almost a blond which is a whole new look for me. I love the way it suits my skin tone. I realize I’m lucky to have my hair. This experience took me outside of my comfort zone and made me try something new.”

HAIR Colourist Ricardo Fonseca lightened her hair, then highlighted it with gold and blonde to create dimension. Stylist Byron Salazar cut shorter pieces in and around her face while maintaining overall length, something new for Lina. He styled her dry hair with a curling iron to emphasize the soft layers.

MAKEUP A light dusting of bronzing powder warms her entire face. Pale blue/green shadow on lids; forest green powder liner under eyes; black mascara on top and bottom lashes. Kubens used pink blush on apples of cheeks; spice colour lip liner over entire mouth and then blotted.

H&L RECOMMENDS Estée Lauder Pure Color Eyeshadow Duo in Super Nova; Artist’s EyePencil in Forest Writer; More Than Mascara in Rich Black; Tender Blush in Pink Kiss; Artist’s LipPencil in Spice Writer.

Heather Farnworth, 44

ON FITNESS “Fitness is a way for me to get in touch with my body and keep it healthy. Yoga, running and rowing make me feel really energized and good about myself. They’re a great stress release for me.”

ON HER NEW LOOK “The colour of the highlights and the warmer base colour really compliment me. This cut suits my face. The makeup felt very comfortable because it was so natural looking.”

HAIR Colourist Kelly Vlahos covered the faded colour and 1-inch regrowth with a warm, rich, brown base that had a splash of coppery red. For contrast and movement, she added golden highlights. To lighten Heather’s hair, which was all one length, stylist Ivana Krnojelac added more layers to create body, movement and texture.

MAKEUP Vanilla frost shadow on brow bone; black liner on the top lid with black mascara; bronzer on cheeks and temples; neutral lip colour.

Damaged hair gets TLC

Cheryl Taylor, 45

ON FITNESS “Because I’ve had breast cancer, I can’t take hormone therapy. To avoid menopausal symptoms I have to work out. Psychologically it helps me a lot.”

ON HER NEW LOOK “The colour is amazing it’s such a nice change for me. Getting my makeup done was a lovely, refreshing experience.”

HAIR Colourist Gabriel Bonilla revived bleached out, uneven colour, and dry, damaged tresses with a golden brown base colour, then scattered medium caramel highlights throughout. A healthy hair diet; a gentle shampoo and moisturizing conditioner suggested for her dry hair. Stylist Mira Bllaca blow-dried and flat ironed before cutting long layers with shorter pieces in front for softness.

MAKEUP Moss green eye shadow in the crease; frosty beige on lid; black liner on outer edges of top lid and black mascara. Peach blush on cheeks and dusty rose lips keeps the look natural.

Washed out becomes radiant

Lydia Young, 66
Retired Nurse
Breast Cancer Survivor

ON FITNESS Life is beautiful. Being active is the best stress reliever. I love being outdoors playing tennis and of course paddling with the dragon boat team.”

ON HER NEW LOOK “The sun fades my hair colour quickly. This new colour was quite rich and lasted. I’m really happy with it!”

HAIR Washed out, dull, dry hair is transformed by colourist Kelly Vlahos by darkening her base colour to a medium brown and adding some beige highlights for dimension. Stylist Ivana Krnojelac’s cut added texture and subtle, youthful layers.

MAKEUP Sun-damaged skin tone is evened out with cream foundation. Eyes emphasized with cream coloured shadow on lids and taupe shadow on outer corners; black mascara on top lashes only. Coral blush and lipstick give a clean, sunny look.

H&L RECOMMENDS Vital Radiance: Soft Dimension Powder Shadow in Desert Dunes; Lash Finding Mascara in Black; Soft Dimension Powder Blush in Coral Radiance; Moisture Boosting Lipcolour in Classic Coral.

New sleek chic

Ruth Levoke, 55
Retired Teacher
Thyroid Cancer Survivor

ON FITNESS “I feel it’s a gift because I survived cancer. I have a few other health issues and this is one of the best things I can do for my own body. I’m working to keep my cardio, flexibility and endurance ability up.”

ON HER NEW LOOK “I struggle with my hair which is quite gray, never knowing what hair colour to choose; it’s been years since I’ve had highlights. I love the way these caramel highlights blend so nicely. The makeup wasn’t overdone which I like because I wear very little.”

HAIR Ruth’s hair colour was too dark. Colourist Ricardo Fonseca lightened the front section then did a copper gloss all over. Stylist Byron Salazar gave her a general all over trim, cleaned up her layers and then straightened the hair to emphasize the new lines.

MAKEUP To make lashes look thicker, Kubens used a neutral taupe eye shadow on lid blended into crease; black liner on top lid and inner bottom rim; finished with black mascara on top lashes. Pink blush on apples of cheeks and dusty rose lipstick keeps the look soft.

H&L RECOMMENDS Elizabeth Arden’s Jewels & Velvet Collection Color: Intrigue Eyeshadow in Sandstone; Density Maxi-mum Volume Mascara in Black; Powder Eyeliner in Smokey Black; Color Intrigue Cheekcolor in Tearose; Plump Perfect Lipstick in Perfect Rose.

Bronze beauty, maple highlights

Gina Cali, 55
Small Business Owner
Breast Cancer Survivor

ON FITNESS “After my cancer I started looking after myself and paying more attention to what I was doing. Fitness is a part of my focus on well-being. It’s now a regular everyday part of my life and always makes me feel better.”

ON HER NEW LOOK “I love the colour. The cut really suits my lifestyle because I can either blow dry it or leave it as is and it still falls into place nicely. I felt like myself because the makeup looks so natural.”

HAIR One-inch gray roots and washed out copper auburn hair made Gina look sallow and pale. Colourist Gabriel Bonilla covered her roots and richened hair with a cool chestnut brown, then added dimension with maple highlights. Stylist Mira Bllaca cut her hair into a modern bob with side swept bangs.

MAKEUP Bronzing powder dusted lightly all over; black liner and black mascara on top lid; bronze liner under bottom lashes; and bronzy peach on cheeks; bronze red on lips.

H&L RECOMMENDS Shiseido The Makeup: Trio Bronzer Duo in Desert Dust; Eyeliner Pencil in Black; Advanced Volume Mascara; Blush Duo in Tan; S4 Shimmery Lipstick.
