Diminishing Wrinkles
using Ancient Chinese Wisdom

The first step of the facial rejuvenation process is complete. A mild alpha hydroxy acid peel removed the dead skin and drained my pores leaving my skin glowing and smooth. I lay waiting for the Doctor to begin the next process.
Why facial acupuncture

My intense frowning has carved ‘gullies’ between my eyebrows that make me appear angry. An eyebrow lift and filling in my cheek folds I believe will give me the perky, pick-me-up I desire. Knowing that Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow get facial acupuncture is a testament that this is one of the latest, yet oldest natural therapies. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me.

What is cosmetic facial acupuncture

A non-surgical procedure that helps to rejuvenate and revitalize the whole body. Based on the principals of Traditional Chinese Medicine through the use of fine disposable acupuncture needles an acupuncturist can help balance the energy in the meridian system or energy pathways of the body. By stimulating the precise 30 facial and 10 body acupuncture points, blood and lymph circulation is increased in the face, resulting in improved collagen production.

The experience

Dr. Katrina Kulhay begins the process. The first needle is inserted at the very top of my head with a light tap; the second needle between the eyebrows; then two in each ear. Next, feet, legs and hands, 20 needles have been inserted to open up the ‘Chi’, the energy lines in the body, to help my body heal itself.

Needles are inserted upwards at my hair line and under my eyebrows to lift the skin. These special facial needles are inserted into the grooves and lines of my face, between my eyebrows, across my forehead and chin, up the folds that run from my mouth to my nose; and three under my chin for a neck lift for a total of 40 needles. Then 8 very tiny needles were placed under each eye and 10 on my upper lip.

My face responded quickly with blood rushing to the area. Let me reassure you I wasn’t bleeding but reacting to the ‘Chi’ increasing blood circulation in those areas. It took approximately 10 minutes to insert 78 needles. Now my job is to relax for 40 minutes.

As the needles are painlessly removed each entry point is dabbed lightly with a cotton ball moistened with rose water.

A Japanese organic green tea mask is applied to my face for 20 minutes. After it is rinsed off a beautiful healing moisturizer is gently massaged into my skin. So how am I feeling? Re-energized, and calm at the same time. And ready for the reveal. How will I look after my first treat-ment? Secretly I hope to see Gwyneth staring back in the mirror. Well look at that! It’s not Gwyneth but I see a difference immediately. My eyebrows have definitively been lifted; the nasal labia folds and the trenches between my eyebrows are definitely not as deep.

The end result

After the 12 recommended treatments over six weeks I’m extremely pleased. Family and friends comment how I look younger and rested. Lines have diminished significantly my skin is tighter and brighter.

Regular treatments once or twice a month will maintain these results. Some practitioners say that the results will last for years. Experts in other fields are not as optimistic and say that surgery may become necessary to achieve more permanent results. That’s a possibility but I won’t know that until I get there. Facial acupuncture is safe, non-invasive and benefits the whole body, so for now I’ll continue with the monthly ‘tune-ups’. Reasonably priced from $1,250-$1,400 for the initial series of treatments; the monthly tune-ups: $100-$120 per treatment. Be sure to choose a certified practitioner and talk to their other patients. Ask questions, and feel confident and comfortable with the answers before you proceed.
