Finding the bliss in the moment

ave you ever felt overwhelmed about the future? Or spent countless hours analyzing the past? The stress and anxiety caused by this over-analysis is unpleasant, and a waste of time and energy. The challenge: to get out of the past and the future to find the bliss in the moment.

Hurricane of fear
Recently, on a flight to our family's long-anticipated vacation, I re-learned this lesson. The plane began its descent in extreme turbulence. Usually a calm flier, I panicked. My mind raced with thoughts of “what if…” and “I should have..."; I was in a downward spiral (metaphorically) into an out of control hurricane of fear. Suddenly, I was distracted by a woman playing peek-a-boo with my son, who was laughing hysterically. Amazed that in the midst of my reeling panic they found bliss, I asked how she managed to stay calm. She explained, “I figured if it was our time to go there was nothing I could do, so I let it go.”

Sage advice
Her composed response reminded me of life-changing advice from Eckhart Tolle: “Focus your attention on the Now and tell me what problems you have at this moment.” In that moment, I hadn't followed Tolle’s sage advice. I succumbed to panic and the emotional experience of my toxic thoughts. I shut out the world and became paralyzed by fear. I missed a moment of connection with my family. If a serious situation developed I wasn’t equipped to deal with it. There was no actual problem, only the raging thoughts in my mind.

The next time your mind races out of control with fear, ask yourself, “Where’s the bliss in this moment?” Notice how this stills the mind’s noise and chaos, clearing it to deal with the present reality. You may surprise yourself and experience peace, fulfillment and bliss in the midst of a trying time. H&L
