What’s your story?

"Don’t be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth..."
~ Rumi

Has your life turned out the way you want? Would you be proud to read your biography? If not, it’s never too late to edit the setting, plot or cast of characters.

In working with leaders and rising stars, I often come across people who appear to ‘have it all’ yet still feel something’s missing. We work together to help them get clear about who they are and what they really want – now.

Trent’s story
Trent is a perfect example of having the courage and integrity to reinvent his story at the peak of his success. With a career that began as a hot, young star in the new media world, 10 years ago Trent started an agency that became the most sought after and profitable in the field. Happily married with a home in the country, Trent appeared to have it all, but it had come at a cost. Exhausted and exasperated, he was ready to throw it all away when we met a year ago.

After doing some challenging work together he got real about his life and realized for the past 10 years he had left half of who he was at home every day. Naturally warm and funny his ‘at work’ persona was serious, strict and distant. Honest feedback from his work team confirmed this. Although they respected his brilliance, they often felt intimidated.

Rewriting his story
First: work through layers of accumulated emotional strain. After major self-reflection, Trent realized he wanted an integrated life – ‘to be all of who he is, in all that he does’. Next: review the logistics to create his new life. The action: replace him at the helm of his company’s operations to focus on the creative aspects. A self-proclaimed control-freak, he leapt into his fears of letting go. Now he works at the company a few days a week and the rest of the time he nurtures his other passions – writing, teaching and enjoying life in the country.

With 100% support from clients and employees, they now feel they get him at his best. He gradually transitioned the unfulfilling aspects of his job to his new, competent replacement to focus on the high-impact work only he can do. The rest of time he refuels with things and people that inspire and energize him. Best of all, he allows himself to be vulnerable and brings his fun side to work, significantly improving team and client relations.

Are you bringing all of who you are to all that you do? If not, what changes do you need to make? What chapters need to close so more authentic experiences can occur? Since it’s all made up, why not write a story that delights you?
