Be careful what you wish for

Be careful what you wish for. You’ve probably heard this expression many times and taken it as a warning of impending threats. What if you considered this saying to be an invitation to create a world of possibilities? Really – be careful what you wish for. Take care, be thoughtful. Set intentions.

Setting intentions
Five years ago, I saw leadership guru Robin Sharma speak at a huge event. I was dumbfounded and inspired. He was speaking my words, my values, my philosophies. I leaned over to my mother who was sitting beside me and said, “Someday I’m going to work with him. Actually, I think we’re going to be friends.”

I kept watching him over the years – read his books, saw him speak a couple of more times. By telling everyone I knew that I was going to someday work with him, I discovered that we shared a mutual friend. At a coaching conference he spoke at, I sat front and centre and introduced myself at the first break. Then I really leapt into my fears and asked him to have lunch with me. Much to my delight, he accepted.

Twists and turns
This is where the story takes a bit of a sad turn. You see, Robin is a very busy man, so when I finally got through to his assistant to schedule a lunch, he was in the middle of writing his latest book (The Greatness Guide – a great read) and he couldn’t meet with me.

After some initial disappointment, I decided not to take it personally and realized that he was walking his talk – focusing on his top priorities and saying no to non-essential things. This was a great lesson for me.

The lessons didn’t stop there. Remember I had experienced a powerful intuition that I would someday work with Robin. I shared this intention with other people and consistently challenged myself to step into my fears to make it happen. I gave it 100% of what I had to give. Finally, when the situation didn’t turn out exactly as I had imagined, I wasn’t attached to that particular outcome and decided to surrender to the process and let it go.

Two months later, I received an email from a former client. She had been asked to put together a team of coaches to lead Robin’s world-class coaching program and she wanted me and my team of North Star Coaches to take on the challenge. I’ve since met with Robin and his team many times and North Star is now the official coaching provider for their world-class coaching program. I was mindful and careful on what I asked for and have achieved the first part of my intention – I’ll let you know when I get to ‘friend’ status. H&L
