ataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are the top two age-related causes of blindness or reduced vision, and result from environmental factors – cigarette smoking, UV damage, along with nutrient deficiencies that protect and enhance eye health. Protect eyes from aging with clinically proven nutritional and herbal supplements.
Lutein and zeaxanthin: While naturally abundant in the macular region of the eye, the body can’t make these antioxidant carotenoids. Protect eyes from UV light and free-radical damage by supplementing. Generous intake of lutein and zeaxanthin reduces risk of macular degeneration by up to 40% and cataracts by up to 20%.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are extremely safe supplements, there are no known side effects or contraindications.

Blueberries, bilberries and eyebright: Blueberries and bilberries (huckleberries) are exceptionally high in capillary-strengthening anthocyanidin bioflavonoids (blue pigment). Bilberries moderate visual fatigue and improve light to dark adjustments. WWII fighter pilots ate bilberry jam to enhance night vision.
Used historically to treat eye irritation, eyebright, a wild plant, has antibiotic and astringent properties; tightens membranes surrounding eyes; rich in Vitamins A and C and anti-inflammatory tannins.
Essential fatty acids (EFAs): In humans, the omega 3 EFA docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is most concentrated in retinal photoreceptors. A higher intake of EFAs reduces incidence of age-related maculopathy and risk of AMD.
Prevent eye diseases and improve vision by eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, nuts and fish; reducing stress; exercising regularly and not smoking; protect eyes with high quality UV sunglasses. Have your eyes tested at least every two years. Consult your health care provider about supplements and dietary changes. H&L
