Immune system boost

our immune system protects you from disease by seeking out bacteria, viruses and tumour cells, and promoting their swift and thorough elimination from your body through various mechanisms. Because pathogens evolve rapidly to avoid detection, the work of the immune system is never done. Combined with various lifestyle factors, this relentless activity can cause your immune system to become overworked or immunodeficient, possibly leading to recurring or life-threatening infections.

Lifestyle causes of a depressed immune system include physical and emotional stress; inadequate sleep; viral or bacterial infections; over-exercise; medical treatments; and aging. Dietary factors like refined sugar, excessive fat and alcohol also depress defense activity.

Specific nutrients, like Vitamin A, essential for healthy mucous membranes, help to prevent the passage of pathogens into the bloodstream. Zinc along with Vitamins C and E help to quench free radicals that can damage cells and lead to disease. New research proposes that low Vitamin D levels increase risk of cold and flu.

Proper hydration helps flush toxins and reduces dry skin cracks that allow easy access to pathogens.

When sick happens
Herbs like echinacea, garlic, ginseng or goldenseal stimulate the immune system. Studies suggest that people who took echinacea after exposure to a cold virus lowered their likelihood of catching a cold by 55%. Probiotics, live bacteria found naturally in yogourt, are important for recolonising the intestine during and after antibiotic use.

If you do get sick this winter, rest assured that your immune system is flexing its defensive muscle – leaving you better protected from future infections. Talk to your Rexall pharmacist about your unique supplement needs and the Replenish & Renew Nutrient Depletion Program. H&L
