ummer’s here and that means more time outdoors, soaking up the heat and sun we crave during our long Canadian winters, but before you head out the door to enjoy a sun filled day, do you know your skin status? The Canadian Cancer Society estimates that each year about 4,600 cases of melanoma (the most serious type of skin cancer) will be diagnosed and that 900 people will die from the disease.
Thankfully, damage from the sun’s UV rays is largely preventable if sun protective measures are taken. During the months of June and July, Rexall and Rexall Pharma Plus pharmacies across the country will hold its second annual Sun Awareness campaign focused on protection, prevention and screening for your whole family. And, on ‘Sun Awareness & Assessment Day’ you can learn about your skin status with a personal photo taken by a UV camera that reveals areas of potential skin damage invisible to the naked eye.

Skin secrets exposed UV reflectance photography helps visualize the results of excess melanin production, a common result of UV exposure. Using specific light filters, UV reflectance photography shows areas of pigment density below the skin’s surface difficult to see in normal light or with the naked eye. A picture revealing the areas of potential damage resulting from UV radiation is extremely helpful in convincing people to use sunscreen daily. Excess UV exposure is demonstrated in UV photography as uneven skin colouration and rough, lined skin texture. The UV rays that create this damage are the rays that increase the risk of skin cancer. Adopting healthy sun safety habits is key.
UV photography is an effective screening tool that helps change a person’s perception of their skin status and does not diagnose any condition. All health concerns should be discussed with your physician. Learn more about Rexall’s Sun Awareness campaign, UV reflectance photography and to find a location visit rexall.ca H&L
