Whether washing with it, drinking it or swimming in it, we don’t want contaminants in our water. Chlorine isn’t a perfect solution: at minimum it can cause irritation and at worst has been linked to cancer. And with discarded plastic creating islands as large as the province of Quebec in our oceans, bottled water has proven to be a dangerous experiment. Try these simple solutions for safe water in your tap or swimming pool.

Say good-bye to chlorine
with an electronic hybrid water conditioning system that pumps pool water through a chamber containing coated titanium plates which oxidize and burn off organic waste. Copper and zinc ions sanitize the water and prevent buildup of algae and bacteria. Suitable for drinking water; new pools and hot tubs and retrofits. www.technopure.com

Ultra Violet (UV) systems destroy harmful bacteria like E.Coli, coliform, cryptosporidium and giardia without adding harmful chemicals to your drinking water or the environment. Water enters the disinfection chamber containing the ultraviolet lamp, where bacteria and other organisms are blasted with high-energy ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Systems can also include sediment and carbon pre-filtration; not suitable for stained or cloudy water. Whole home systems available. www.aquatell.com

Reduce chlorine use by 50%
with ozone. Ozone is produced on-site, and as the pump runs is pulled into the water. Ozone breaks down organic compounds (lotions, oils) and alters ammonia compounds (urine and perspiration) so they are unable to combine with and use up chlorine. No obnoxious compounds (like chloramines) are created. Available for home use; for new pools and retrofits. www.waterquality.net

Try a salt water solution in your pool if you’re irritated by chlorine’s effects. Pool water and dissolved sodium chloride (salt) passes through the ‘cell’ portion of the equipment. It produces a chlorine gas that dissipates instantaneously to sanitize and oxidize water without dangerous chloramines and other chlorine compounds that cause the tell-tale smell, skin irritation and bleaching problems associated with chlorine. Saline systems reuse the salt and all that they require is an inexpensive periodic salt top-up. Suited for new pools or retrofits. www.watermaidcanada.com and www.zodiacpoolsystems.ca  H&L
