any parents remember the delight of childhood sleepovers. But, for a child who suffers from ‘nocturnal enuresis’ or bedwetting, embarrassment often prevents participation. Bedwetting occurs when a child unknowingly urinates in bed past about age five or six. Frequently, the cause is simply a deep sleep that prevents the child from waking when the bladder is full. More common with boys, there can be a genetic component: if one parent wet the bed, the child has a 25% risk. If it was both parents, the odds increase to about 65%. Children outgrow bedwetting: 15% of children wet the bed at age five; 8% at age 8. Even without treatment, numbers drop to 2% by age 15.
If bedwetting ends for six months or more, then begins again; or if there are daytime accidents or discomfort when urinating, talk to your health care provider. caringforkids.cps.ca |
