The gifted children

utism affects about one out of every 165 children born, and significantly impacts those diagnosed, their families and caregivers. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are typically identified before age three; boys are affected most. Asperger Syndrome, an ASD, is often detected when a child reaches school age. Those with ASDs may develop cognitive, language, motor and social skills differently from other children, yet they each have different abilities.

These abilities are garnering new attention, encouraging their development. These remarkable gifts exhibited by some children are often in the arts and sciences and include detailed memory, focus and a superb ability to manipulate data. In some cases, these abilities far surpass the so-called norm.

Communication breakthroughs
New software programs like WordQ allow children to communicate their unique perspectives and intelligence, personality and depth of character. In fact, non-verbal, Canadian 16-year-old Carly Fleischmann, featured on CTV, Larry King Live and 20/20, learned the power
of her one-finger typing at the age of 10; now she blogs about the inner realities
of autism and interviews notable celebrities. Carlysvoice.com

The new book Artism: The Art of Autism offers an incredible glimpse into the imaginative worlds of people with ASD, sharing each contributor’s personal insights and perceptions. Mature beyond her years, 15-year-old Amanda LaMunyon advises people with learning differences that “their challenges are also their gifts.” A great lesson for us all. ArtismToday.com  H&L
